Probably somewhere that he’ll get paid a decent wage and/or expand his readership. I can’t imagine that he made much working for Jalopnik.

Is this real life? Without Doug or Sean the only two that keep me going back to the front page are David and Andrew

Dang. I already have to remember to check over at the drive since rogoway left. Maybe I can kill two birds if Doug goes over there.

It is, but Doug represented a lot of what’s wrong with the current generation of auto-journalist. His articles always centered around himself instead of the car, and the attention (or lack thereof) that came along with them. When it came to pieces that weren’t about his personal cars, he was quick to pass judgement with no real supporting evidence for any of his opinions. I understand that both of those things are par for the course these days, but I expected better out of someone who had supposedly been in the industry.

So you don’t like Top Gear, either, right?

Does this mean that they’re hiring? I’d drive press cars and write about. Plus, I have actual credentials given that I’m published already. Lol

If Top Gear was an hour of them whining about no one paying attention to their GTR, none of us would. But Doug gets a pass, right?

Sadly, I find your response to be a lot of what’s wrong with the current generation of journalism consumer. The days of humor, of longform storytelling, of experiential writing are very much over for so many young people. Bill Bryson, Dave Barry, George Plimpton. The legends! Now, young people want stuff no-frills, fast, easy to consume, simple, quick. I get the sense that some young people would actually prefer bullet points. That’s not my style and I sincerely hope it never is.
Of course, I also hope my style never involves complaining about free content on the Internet.
That's gonna leave a mark!

The front page seems to be mostly articles from other sites, and of course updates anytime someone at Tesla farts.

Hey Doug. I was always a fan of David E Davis and John Phillips. Those are my legends. You know, the guys that could tell a fantastic story about cars where they were the supporting character to the automobile in question. But I understand that a lot of writers can’t tell a story unless they’re the main focus these days. Byproduct of the times I guess.
And just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s worthwhile...

I notice you left off Peter Egan, Harry Metcalfe. Hell, even the Top Gear trio, which was far more about them and their humor than the cars they drove. I also think you should go back and read more David E — he’s the main focus of a lot more of those stories than you seem to realize.
A lot of people hate a guy on the Internet who has cool cars — that I get. To me, the fact that you bring up one single column from a year ago where you’ve misinterpreted my meaning kind of proves you were never going to like my stuff anyway. You can’t win them all; I’m OK with that.
